Swapping Out Flush Mount Light Fixtures

Another easy way to update and upgrade your home is by replacing your light fixtures. Do you have builder grade or very standard and outdated dome flush mounts throughout your home? Maybe they are in your bedrooms, hallways, laundry room, etc. Depending on the space you may want to swap the fixtures for something simple or a little more decorative.
Flush mount fixtures can often be the only source of lighting in a room, so it is important that they give off a good amount of bright light in addition to being aesthetically pleasing. When selecting a fixture pay attention to the type of shade used, a translucent shade will give off soft ambient light versus a clear or no shade will give off a brighter light.
Also, look at the lumens of the light fixture if it has an integrated LED strip or on the light bulbs if they are sold separately. A lumen measures the total amount of light the light bulb emits, so the higher the lumen the brighter the light. This is not to be confused with watts which measures the amount of energy a light bulb uses. Both are important so make sure you read the specifications of each light fixture before purchasing light bulbs. A general guideline for lumens in a bedroom is 1000-2000 and a hallway needs about 500-1000. This guideline can vary though depending on the size of your space.
Flush mount fixtures are also normally easy to swap out because the wiring and support system in the ceiling is the same if you are swapping like for like fixtures. Consult a local electrician or YouTube for great DIY videos for swapping out light fixtures.
